Freedom of Space: skateboard culture and the public space

This was a dream project.  Steve Olpin won one of 10 slots in the Fuel Experiment.  They gave him a budget to make a film about Skateboarding.  He hired me to co-direct. This thing was a blast to shoot.  We'd just show up in a city and start talking at the local skateshop.  Met tons of cool people.  And we got to go to italy to have Jorgen Leth record the Narration.  This one is not officially available Anywhere.  But if you need a fundraiser for a skatepark, or a good discussion starter for your local beurocrats, let me know.  2 clips to check out below.

Burton Silvrman: Drawing the intimate space

A documentary about artist Burt Silverman, commissioned by the BYU Museum of Art.  This was a very fun one.  We went to New York and hung out with burt for a few days in his country home, and then a few days in his Manhattan home.  Burt was a great subject.  Rose Card was the student intern helping us out, and in the end we felt like she had done so much for the film that she deserved a directors credit.  You can order the dvd here.  Watch a clip at the link below.

It's a feature length doc that was a labor of love.  It played in over 80 different theaters around the world. The DVD is out, buy it here. Lots of good press on this one.  The New York Times Article is one of my favs.  Check the Articles page for others.   If you don't know who the minutemen are, spend a few bucks on double nickles on the dime and drop me an email to let me know what you think.

the day

I was the editor for this documentary about big wave surfers Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, and Darrick Doerner during a particularly epic swell at Jaws.  Sonny Miller directed and the film was shot by Don King, Sonny Miller, and Mike Prickett.  I had been a big fan of Sonny's work before I got this gig, so I was honored to be able to work with him. Buy it here.

beyond the border

This is a five part series for pbs produced by combat films. I was the editor on two of them.  Arms Bazaar is a look at the comercialization of the arms industry through a visit to an arms trade show in the middle east.  Faultlines and Pipelines is a look at the BTC pipeline built around several conflicts in order to deliver oil from the caspian sea to the west.  Check out the series website here. Trailers for both shows can be viewed there.

asterisk and asterisk2

I was an extra shooter on this first ever non-team wakeskate film.  The best wakeskaters in the world came to a tiny resivore outside Las Vegas for a full week of pushing eachother and their sport.   It felt like history in the making and I was really stoked to be able to be a part of it.  A couple of years later Justin Stephens did it again with Asterisk2.  check it

awful normal

This one was a life changer.  Celeste Davis called me asking for help on a documentary she wanted to make about how she had been sexually molested as a child by a family freind and how she was going to knock on the door of the man who commited this heinous act.  I was priveledged to be able to help out as a camera man and to participate in some of the editing.  This one will change your life too.  Check out the website.

nasty's world

I was the co-director and editor with Steve Olpin on this documentary about BMX dirt jumping legend Cory "nasty" Nastazio.  Nasty's world won "Best Film" at the 2003 X-dance Film Festival.  This is probably the most fun I've ever had making a film.  Cory (and his mom) are some of the nicest folks I've ever met and I was stoked Steve asked me to be a part of the film.  The film cannot be described, it must be seen.  Watch this one and then call your mom to tell her you love her.  Trailer here.  Buy it here.

Dig25

I was the editor and did some shooting on this one.  It's 25 short films about various BMX pros.  Check out one of my favorite sections here.  Buy it here.
